The Hippodrome
During the WW11 years the Hippodrome held a Children’s Saturday Matinee, and the British War Frigate MHS Amethyst was adopted as the logo.
During April, 1948, The Amethyst was sent up the Tangtze River to relieve a Guard ship and to evacuate British and Commonwealth Citizens. The ship was attacked by Communist forces, and grounded on Rose Island. In June, 1949 the crew made a daring escape and rejoined the British Pacific Fleet.
She was used in the making of the film ‘The Yangtze Incident’and was scrapped in Plymouth in 1957
If anyone has an old 'Amethyst Club' badge we
could borrow to scan for the website please let us know. It was a round white badge with a picture of the ship on with blue writing.
